CTT and the Operators Works Together to Properly Handle the 3G Network Shutdown
As mobile communications technology progressed from analog format to 4G/5G standard, the technological architecture has undergone a fundamental change. The current 3G system uses circuit switching technology to provide voice services, while 4G/5G has upgraded to packet switching technology, thus VoLTE functionality is required to enable voice communications. Responding to changes in market demand, 3G licencees has not applied for renewal. Thus 3G services has completed its historical mission, and was decommissioned orderly on 5 June of this year as planned. Since last year, CTT has continuously coordinated with the various operators to make proper migration arrangements, to ensure the general public’s communication services are not affected.
As 3G networks cease services, some of the users who has not activated VoLTE functionality could have previously make voice calls via the 3G network, will encounter a disruption in their voice functionality. Generally, users only need to activate their handset’s VoLTE functionality to resume voice functionality. However, some older handsets may not support VoLTE functionality, or some devices may not have preloaded the network parameters of Macao’s local operators, causing users of those handsets not being able to peruse voice services.
Different handset manufacturers have varying product positioning and marketing strategies for Macao market. Even though the operators may strive to have the related settings incorporated via commercial negotiations, but the establishment of an agreement cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, operators are currently helping affected users via providing $0 or discounted price plans for VoLTE supporting handsets. Affected users may also according their own circumstances choose other suitable handsets or operators, in order to resume voice services as soon as possible.
CTT will be in close contact with the operator, and request the operator to continue to roll out numerous promotions, including handset offers that go as low as $0. Operators shall also provide to users a list of VoLTE devices compatible with its network, and strengthen the support provided in their on-site customer service and hotline, in order to help users migrate successfully and smoothly from 3G to 4G/5G.
