Result of public tendering for 5G licenses and issuance of the licenses
In June 2022, the government of Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) held the public tender for the issuance of 5G licenses. The Macao Post and Telecommunications Bureau received two tenders submitted by the Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau, S.A.R.L. (CTM) and China Telecom (Macau) Company Limited (CT). Both tenders were accepted following the tender opening process and were admitted the fulfillment of the requirements relating to the granting of licenses.
In view of the foregoing and in accordance to the Despacho do Chefe do Executivo No. 196/2022 and No. 197/2022, the government of MSAR has granted CTM and China Telecom the licenses for public terrestrial mobile telecommunications network and service of 5th Generation (5G licenses), for a period of eight years, starting on 8 November 2022. Under the terms provided for the 5G licenses, licensees must build on their own initiative, a network system capable of achieving coverage, with good quality, of 50% of the territory of the MSAR within 12 months from the date of issue of the license, and in the following 18 months, full coverage, with good quality, of the entire territory either by their own initiative, cooperating with other licensees or through sharing. In addition, they must also start providing services within one year from the date of entry into force of the license.
